How Much Sugar Is Too Much?

Know the limits for added sugar and where it hides.

· 2 min read

Added versus natural sugar

Added or free sugars are those put in food and drinks, plus sugars in honey, syrups and juice. Sugar inside whole fruit comes with fibre and is not the concern.

Recommended limits

The WHO says to keep free sugars under 10 percent of calories, with 5 percent as a better target. The American Heart Association suggests 36 g for men and 25 g for women.

Easy swaps

Sugary drinks are the biggest source for most people. Swap to water, sparkling water or unsweetened tea, and check yoghurts, sauces and cereals.
