Understanding BMR and Your Metabolism

Basal metabolic rate is the energy you burn at rest. Learn what raises and lowers it.

What BMR covers

BMR is the energy needed for breathing, circulation, temperature control and cell repair. It makes up 60 to 70 percent of daily calorie use for most people.

What influences it

Lean mass, age, sex, body size and genetics all play a part. Muscle burns more energy at rest than fat, and BMR falls slowly with age.

Myths about "fast metabolism"

Differences between people of the same size are usually modest. Crash dieting can lower metabolic rate, while strength training and adequate protein help protect it.
