Understanding the GAD-7 Anxiety Questionnaire
A seven-item screen for generalized anxiety.
What it measures
The GAD-7 asks about worry, restlessness and irritability over the last two weeks, scored from 0 to 3 for a total of 0 to 21.
Cut-offs
Scores of 5, 10 and 15 indicate mild, moderate and severe anxiety. A score of 10 or higher suggests further evaluation.
Helpful steps
Regular exercise, sleep, reduced caffeine, breathing practice and talking therapy are effective. Medicines can help when needed.
