How Much Sleep Do Adults Need?

Seven to nine hours for most adults, and the cost of shortchanging it.

· 2 min read

Recommended hours

Adults need seven to nine hours, with older adults needing seven to eight. A few people function well on slightly less or more.

Sleep debt

Regular short sleep builds up debt that affects mood, attention, appetite and immunity. Weekend catch-up helps partly but does not fully reverse it.

Paying it back

Add 30 to 60 minutes of sleep nightly until you wake without an alarm feeling refreshed.
