Risks you cannot change

Age over 45, family history, certain ethnic backgrounds and a history of gestational diabetes raise risk.

Risks you can change

Excess weight, inactivity, poor sleep, smoking and high blood pressure all contribute. Weight around the abdomen matters most.

Screening

Adults aged 35 and over or younger with risk factors should be screened every three years. Earlier testing is advised in pregnancy risk.
