Ovulation and the Fertile Window
Timing intercourse in the six days before and on ovulation boosts chances.
The fertile window
The egg lives about 12 to 24 hours, but sperm can survive up to five days. The fertile window is the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day.
Finding ovulation
In a 28-day cycle ovulation is around day 14, and in other cycles it occurs about 14 days before the next period. Ovulation tests detect the hormone surge about a day ahead.
Boosting chances
Having sex every one to two days in the fertile window is as effective as perfect timing. See a clinician after 12 months of trying, or 6 months if over 35.
