Eating for Two? Pregnancy Calorie Needs
You need extra calories only in the second and third trimesters.
How much extra
About 340 extra calories a day in the second trimester and 450 in the third, roughly a snack, not a second meal. No extra is needed in the first trimester.
Key nutrients
Folate, iron, iodine, vitamin D, choline and omega-3 fats are especially important. A prenatal vitamin with 400 to 800 mcg of folic acid is recommended.
Food safety
Avoid raw or undercooked meat, unpasteurised dairy, high-mercury fish and alcohol. Limit caffeine to 200 mg a day.
