Kidney Function and eGFR

Understand eGFR, creatinine and when kidney disease is diagnosed.

· 2 min read

What eGFR is

The estimated glomerular filtration rate uses creatinine, age and sex to estimate how well kidneys filter blood. The CKD-EPI 2021 equation no longer uses race.

Stages

An eGFR of 90 or more is normal, and under 60 for three months suggests chronic kidney disease. Albumin in urine also guides staging.

Protecting kidneys

Control blood pressure and blood sugar, avoid regular NSAIDs, stay hydrated and have yearly tests if at risk.

An eGFR under 60 for three months or more suggests chronic kidney disease; stages also depend on urine albumin. Discuss results with your clinician.
