Guidelines

The UK advises no more than 14 units a week spread over three or more days. US guidance sets moderate drinking at up to one drink a day for women and two for men.

Risks

Alcohol raises the risk of liver disease, high blood pressure, several cancers and accidents, and it adds many calories.

Cutting back

Set drink-free days, choose smaller servings and swap to lower-strength options. Talk to a doctor before quitting if you drink heavily.
