BMI for Athletes and Older Adults
Why standard BMI cut-offs can mislead if you are muscular or older.
Muscular people
Muscle is denser than fat, so heavy lifters can have an overweight BMI with low body fat. Waist size and body fat estimates give a clearer picture.
Older adults
Slightly higher BMIs of 25 to 30 are linked with good outcomes in people over 65, probably because reserves help during illness. Unintended weight loss is the bigger risk.
Better markers
Combine BMI with waist-to-height ratio, strength, blood pressure and lab results. A clinician can help interpret them together.
