Body Fat Percentage Explained
What counts as lean, average or high body fat, and how to estimate yours at home.
Why body fat matters
Body fat is energy storage and insulates organs, so some is essential. Too much, especially around the abdomen, raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
Typical ranges
Average body fat is about 18 to 24 percent for men and 25 to 31 percent for women. Athletes are lower, and very low levels can harm hormones and bone health.
Ways to measure
DEXA scans are the most accurate common method. The tape-based US Navy method and bioelectrical scales are convenient and good for tracking trends if you measure the same way each time.
