Triglycerides and Insulin Resistance

A high triglyceride to HDL ratio often signals metabolic trouble.

The link

When cells resist insulin, the liver makes more triglyceride-rich particles and lowers HDL. A ratio above 4 often goes with insulin resistance.

What raises triglycerides

Refined carbohydrates, sugary drinks, alcohol, excess weight and some medicines raise them. Very high levels can cause pancreatitis.

Lowering them

Cutting sugar and alcohol, losing weight, adding omega-3 rich fish and exercising can reduce triglycerides by a third or more.
