· 2 min read

Definition

Non-HDL cholesterol equals total cholesterol minus HDL. It includes LDL, VLDL and remnants that all promote plaque.

Why use it

It is easy to calculate, valid when triglycerides are high and can be measured without fasting. Guidelines often set a goal 30 mg/dL above the LDL target.

What to do

If it is high, discuss lifestyle changes and, if needed, medicine with your clinician.
