Home Blood Pressure Monitoring: Getting It Right

Home readings often predict risk better than a single clinic visit.

Choose a cuff

Use a validated upper-arm monitor with a cuff that fits. Wrist and finger devices are less reliable.

Technique

Rest for five minutes, sit with your back supported and arm at heart level, and do not talk. Take two readings a minute apart.

Keep a log

Record readings for seven days, mornings and evenings, and share the average with your clinician. Averages of 135/85 or higher at home suggest hypertension.
