Cholesterol Numbers Explained

LDL, HDL, triglycerides and what a lipid panel shows.

· 2 min read

The main numbers

LDL carries cholesterol into artery walls, while HDL carries it back to the liver. Triglycerides are fats in the blood, raised by sugar, alcohol and excess calories.

Typical targets

Many adults aim for LDL under 100 mg/dL, HDL above 40 for men and 50 for women, and triglycerides under 150. People at high risk may have lower LDL targets.

Improving them

Eat more fibre and unsaturated fat, cut trans and saturated fat, move more and lose excess weight. Statins are highly effective for those who need them.
